Our classes offer help  in reading, writing, and maths, as well as improving computing skills and working towards NCEA L1 unit standards. Our tutors are friendly and supportive and are experienced in developing programmes which recognise individual learning styles. 

ADULT Community Classes


Adult Community Classes offer help in reading, writing, maths, and computing skills; and working towards NCEA L1 unit standards. 

Part time up to 8 hours / week

Our Literacy Pathways course allows learners to learn at their own pace and level, based on individual goals and needs. The courses are small - up to 10 learners per course. 

We currently have classes around Christchurch in:

  • Upper Riccarton

  • Rowley

  • St Albans

  • Papanui (ESOL)

  • Wigram (ESOL)

  • Upper Riccarton (ESOL)


There is no fee for attending classes, however regular attendance is required.

First Steps to Literacy and Numeracy course for adults with intellectual impairments or those living with a mental illness.

Part-time up to 14 hours /week


We provide the opportunity to work towards:

  • Work and Community Skills (Supported Learning) Unit Standards

  • Improved Reading, Writing and Maths

  • Computing skills

  • CVs and cover letters

Learners in the First Steps class work together to build relationships and a sense of community. Working with the tutor, all learners develop an individual learning plan which guides their learning.

Teacher assistants and volunteers work alongside learners to enable specific skills to be focused on in a supportive and positive environment.

The Literacy Pathways

course is primarily for younger adults

16-20 years old.



Full time 20 hours / week


       Learners work towards:

  • Unit Standards including Level 1 NCEA literacy and numeracy units.

  • Learner driver licence theory

  • Computing skills

  • CVs and cover letters

  • Developing literacy and numeracy skills

While working in this class, learners create individual learning plans with their tutor to achieve their goals.


Class numbers are kept low, under eight in a class.
